5 Steps in Buying Auto Insurance

By: TryMyDEALS editors

1. Obtain a new quote every year
• On average every subsequent year you look for insurance your rates will usually drop by 5-10%.
2. Get the right amount of coverage
• The minimum is to get at least the amount required by your state. Refer to your state DMV gov site. The trick is to not buy excess coverage and to protect the assets that you do have. If you do not have a house or assets over 100k, I recommend you purchase
i. 50/100/25 – The first number is bodily injury for one person injured in an accident, the second 100 figure is for all the people injured in an accident and the third figure, 25 is the property damage amount covered.
ii. If you have large assets that you want to protect, I recommend you go with 100/300/50.
3. Deductible
• The goal of insurance is to only use it when it is needed. A great way to reduce your premiums to go with a higher deductible. I recommend you go with at least a $500 and if possible a $1,000 deductible. Selecting these deductibles will two things, first – lowers the premium and two, makes you think carefully prior to filing a claim. In most situations where repairs are at or about your deductible – the best situation is to repair the damage yourself and not risk filing a claim and damaging your claim history. If an insurance companies considers you a claim risk, your chance of getting a good rate will be next to none.
4. Don’t file small claims
• As explained earlier, small claims will only raise your rates.
5. Protecting your insurance record and asking for discounts.
• Always be insured, never go without insurance for more than 90 days. Keep a record of all your insurance as proof in case an insurance company request your information.
• Utilize discounts. Many insurance companies offer discounts for everyone from engineers, teachers, and etc.
