Money Saving Tip: How to Repair Your Car for Less

1. Find out what needs to be repaired

Go to your local Autozone or Kragen and obtain an ODB reader, which is a tool that can tell you what is wrong with your car.  These stores will require a deposit, just in case you feel too lazy to return it . Then plug the ODB reader in your car’s port and it will list several fault codes – go to obd-codes.com to find out what part or system has failed.

2.Determine parts that need to the replaced or repaired

Do a google search on the specific part that needs to be purchased to locate the lowest price. If you really want savings – look for rebuilt / re manufactured parts that come with warranty or even non oem units, which are off brand parts. For maintenance parts, I always recommend you go with OEM brands, except for oil filters / air filters (fram) / and motor oil – where you can use the larger manufactures such as penzoil, etc.

3. Install the part or find a reputable installer

Go to the library and make a copy of the Chiton repair guide for your vehicle. These books are great for specific repairs that are not addressed online. Google also list many repair guides as well. Then for you real do it yourself-ers go back to Autozone / Kragen and pick up the tools you will need to make the repair. If you are not that mechanically incline go to a trusted local car repair person and have him install the part. For maintenance items such as oil repairs and replacing filters – these are some of the easiest things to do, thus you should pull up some guides on the web. TrymyDEALS has found these easy to follow these sites that cover a majority of maintenance / repairs for the average car owner.
